In order to fulfill the requirement for digital payments at toll plazas across the country, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) introduced FASTag as part of the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) program. With FASTag-specific scanners, radio frequency identification technology is used by the FASTag to facilitate smooth payments. To use, a FASTag is simply affixed to a car’s windshield. The given tag is connected to a prepaid account, from which all toll fees are automatically subtracted at the time of scanning. The current sensors automatically identify the RFID tag as the car gets closer to a toll booth and take the necessary amount out of the prepaid account associated with the FASTag.

If, for whatever reason, the sensors at toll plazas malfunction, the toll authorities always have a portable scanner that can identify the RFID tag in the same way and take the necessary amount out of the associated account.
